The ranks of the long-term unemployed have been growing rapidly. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the seasonally adjusted average duration of unemployment in August 2010 was 34 weeks. In the past year alone, the percentage of unemployed workers who have been jobless for six months or more has doubled.
