Green Bay Packers make it 17 Super Bowls out of 20 for lower-unemployment metro areas

RiseSmart’s Super Bowl analysis, released last Monday, revealed an amazingly strong correlation between Super Bowl winners and jobless rates — and predicted Green Bay would win Sunday’s game as a result.

And sure enough, the Packers won, making it 17 wins out of the last 20 Super Bowls for teams whose metropolitan areas had the lower unemployment rate.

Here’s a chart showing the correlation over the past two decades, including Sunday’s game. The jobless rates are annual rates for each metro area in the year prior to the Super Bowl. The asterisk by the numbers for this year’s game indicate that they are based on preliminary stats from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
