It wouldn't go on a resume (at least I hope not) but the worst thing someone can say to me in an interview may be that they want to get into the business (in my case, public relations) because they are "a people person." Any other interview phrases you think are deadly?

Hate to say it, but on the other hand I would also say "Excellent communication skills" is one of the most over-used job description requirements.

Do people really use phrases like this on their resumes?

I know it's astounding, Maria, but not only do people write whole resumes full of dreck like this, but they argue furiously that this is the only approach they will consider. I have 1200 messages in my in-box from Yahoo! readers right now, and least 250 of them share the view that doing away with resume boilerplate is heresy. To Justine's point, employers use this dead language in their own job ads. This causes lots of job-seekers to think that they need to reply in kind. Not so! It's one thing to pull boilerplate phrases and paragraphs out of an old job ad and re-use 'em; that's what corporate recruiters and HR people do, because it's easy. That doesn't mean they want to slog through reams of corporatespeak language in our resumes! They don't. It's mind-numbing. Your brain goes to sleep after about ten of those things. A few readers reminded me of some other heinous resumes phrases I hadn't included in the article: "I want to take my career to the next level" "I am a self-starter" and, course "attention to detail" Is there any realm outside the business world where a person would open his or her mouth and say "attention to detail?" Hate to say it also, but agree with Justine B - majority of these phrases are driven by the trite job postings that require candidates have these "skills" - and the ironic part is most companies don't possess the skills they "require"

I would have to say that "superior (or excellent) communication skills" is a weak statement on a resume. If one is such a good communicator, why should he or she have to come out and say it?

As someone who looks at approx 250 resumes a day, I agree that "self starter" is the most inexplicable. Compared to what? A wind-up doll? BTW, job seekers, it's true, I spend on average 15-30 seconds per resume. Sorry, but there are lots of hamburger flippers applying to VP of Engineering jobs, if you know what I mean.
