Just for fun: “HRmageddon”

Test out your backstabbing skills in HRmageddon

We recently came across a new game online that is so fun that you should already be considering banning it… or taking a secret 10 minute break to give it a try. Maybe both. It all depends on what kind of administrator you are.

The game is called HRmageddon, and it’s a free Flash game that can be played spontaneously through your browser (no downloading required). All you have to do is point and click to command a team of office workers in their cubicle quest. The premise of the game is that Gray Solutions is merging with Beige Dynamics (complete with hilariously bland corporate logos). A memo has gone out about the inevitable redundancies and layoffs, and management has decided on a simple “kill or be killed” policy. Your workers, armed with staplers and fueled by coffee, are fighting for their jobs — and their lives.

The game is cute to look at and fun to play. The moves are vaguely chess-like and will be familiar to any player of standard turn-based RPGs. Character types available to hire are Manager, Receptionist, Sales, and IT Guy, each with different strengths and weaknesses (the Manager can motivate others, for instance). There are a variety of attacks for these characters to perform, such as Server Crash, Staple Gun, Backstab, and 1000 Paper Cuts. The strategy is fun to work out, and the animations are charming. It all adds up to quite a time-waster, and we mean that in the nicest possible way.

Tips for the game:

  • A trip to the break room will revitalize tired, weak employees
  • Don’t just capture cubicles and wait; press your offense forward to capture even more of your opponent’s cubicles
  • Don’t avoid the power-ups because they are hard to get to, as they can make or break the game

Tips about the game:

  • Consider banning it because it’s so much fun and a potential time-waster
  • Re-consider the wisdom of banning it, as that’s basically just promoting it as a fun thing to do
  • Play it very quietly with the door to your office shut

Kudos to THUP Games for designing and programming the incredibly fun HRmaggedon, and to Adult Swim for hosting and promoting it.

If you have a score worth boasting about on HRmageddon, or a can’t-lose tactic, tell us in the Comments!

I agree with the statement “It all adds up to quite a time-waster, and we mean that in the nicest possible way.” This damn game costs me untold hours of work!
Good article, I have more tips at my web site.
